Thousands of California state workers walk off job in one-day strike

Thousands of state workers have walked off the job in a one-day strike that is expected to be felt across the Bay Area.

SEIU Local 1000 puts the number of workers on strike at about 95,000.

The workers serve in more than 140 state departments and agencies, including the DMV and state benefits programs such as disability and unemployment.

The strike is happening statewide and for the first time in the union’s history.

In the Bay Area, there are two locations where workers will be on the picket lines: outside the California Public Utilities Commission in San Francisco and at the Elihu Harris State Building in Oakland.

SEIU Local 1000 is the largest public-sector union in the state and one of the largest in the country.

The one-day strike comes after failed negotiations between workers and Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration.

NBC Bay Area’s Ginger Conejer Saab has the full report in the video above.
